I did it. I joined a group on Facebook (Katt’s Book Club) and participated in the book of the month for July, NOS4A2. This was my FIRST horror tale and it won’t be my last! I would like to note that I found this group thanks to Katt’s Book Corner here on WordPress!
I started to read this via audiobook and guys…that is TOUGH. You are all rockstars who are able to follow along with audiobooks. I eventually broke down and got the physical book from the library and started to do both and then gave up on the audiobook. I will say, it irked me with how the narrator pronounced “Haverhill.” I’m from New England and had family grow up in that area of Massachusetts and you do NOT pronounce it “Haver-hill.” ‘Nuff background…
So this is the story of Vic who has a supernatural power and can ride her bike across a bridge and be anywhere she needs to be. Eventually she uses her power to try and stop Charlie Manx, a man who kidnaps children and takes them to Christmasland, where he claims they’ll be treated better than if they stayed with their parents.
I didn’t find this to be all too scary…it was disturbing, yes, terrifying and can’t read by myself at night, no. This is an incredibly long book at almost 700 pages, but don’t let that intimidate you. It is needed for every detail in this book. We meet some awesome characters (my favorite is Maggie, another person with supernatural powers) and I found myself cheering Vic on.
Yes, this is now a television show on AMC and yes I am watching it now. I became so enthralled with this book. It consumes you and you are reading the pages with an intense hope. I liked how it ended and then I didn’t like how it ended…2 major things happen at the end and one I loved and the other made me mad, haha.
4 stars. This was a great read and despite its size, didn’t take me that much longer to read because I kept my nose inbetween the pages at all times. The chapters are broken down into fairly small bits so it is easy to pick up and read for even a few minutes at a time! Don’t let the genre keep you from reading this one, it’s definitely a great thriller!
