I was hesitant to accept this offer as this book is outside of my usual wheelhouse of books I read, but I felt like taking a chance.
The imagery this book has is unreal. It is such a unique approach to what goes on in the under world I was absolutely fascinated at Andersen’s take on Hell. From different creatures to unbroken promises to how Lucifer came to be the Devil, it was all awesome.
This is a young adult novel that I feel that adults can enjoy. Our main character is Philip, a young 13 year old boy…who is a GOOD boy. He is being picked on by the class bully and in an unfortunate accident, ends up at the gates of Hell (instead of the bully).
A huge mistake has been made. Lucifer is looking for a successor and ends up with an angel on his doorstep instead of a rotten devil. Lucifer decides to get Philip ready to be a devil and starts his training. Can someone who is so good and pure turn out to be able to be evil and naughty? You’ll have to read to find out!
This book would be great for middle school kids and above (provided you’re ok with them reading about Hell, I know not everyone is). It is a wonderful fantasy novel that has turned me on to the fantasy genre!! This is what happens when you take a chance on a book…you may end up loving it!
4 star read. This is part of a series with book 4 coming out in October. This is perfect for a kid who is looking for something interesting to read…and if you’re worried about it being focused on evil, it’s not. It has a really good message in it, trust me. I can’t say more without spoiling it! Have you read a book that is outside of your typical realm and ended up enjoying it??
