Sunday Funday: #DNF #DidNotFinish #Books #BookWorm #Reading

Let me start by saying my normal mantra when it comes to DNFing a book is I simply don’t do it…if I want to read a book I will muster through it.  There have been times when suddenly I find myself loving and enjoying the book!  But guess what happened recently…

DNF

So, I have seen some reviews for The Doll Factory and loved the cover so I requested it from my local library.

DollFactory.jpg

After the first chapter I looked at myself and thought…WTF?!?!  Then I read a blurb…guys, this book is not a book I would ever pick out to read.  I’m not the biggest fan of historical fiction and this book just didn’t jive with me.

I kept reading…maybe I could get in to it.  I got to page 30, closed the book, and returned it.  Something I RARELY do.  Me.  DNF.  That just never happens!!  I look at it this way though…I have so many other books to read currently in my possession, why waste my time.  Plus it’s a fairly popular book so why hold up traffic with it at my library.  I will admit…it feels freeing!  I understand why a lot of you don’t hold on so hard like I do!

How do you feel about DNFing a book?  What was the last book you DNF??

Book Review: Goodbye Stranger @rebstead @randomhouse #YoungAdult #Sexting #Teens #MiddleSchool #Growth #MustRead #BookWorm

I saw one of you review this book and I happened to be in the library when I read it so I snagged this book!  I can’t find the review that I saw this on, so if you reviewed this book lately & I liked your post, PLEASE let me know so I can give you proper credit!

GoodbyeStranger

This is such an important book I think every young person should read.  As someone who went through school without having to worry about social media, this was eye opening for me!  Can I just keep my babies at home with me forever?!?!?

This book follows the story of Bridge, an accident survivor who is trying to figure out the meaning of life.  We have her friends at school and get to see her relationships with them.  She befriends Sherm, a guy in her theater tech crew, is there a friends to romance vibe coming?  We also have a side story going on where a young person takes the day off (runs away) on Valentine’s Day because she just wants to be away from everyone.

These kids end up seeing how life can be.  Bridge’s friend is dealing with the aftermath of her sending a photo to a boy, even though she was NOT naked.  Sherm is dealing with his grandfather moving out of his house and leaving his grandmother for another woman…plus his friendship with Bridge.  Bridge still wonders why did she survive her accident?

This book tackles real issue head on.  This is one I will definitely have my kids read as they get a little older.  Even though this is geared toward middle school students/tweens/teens, it provides excellent insight for those of us whom are older and did not live life in the midst of the digital age!  A huge plus for this book is it’s a quick, easy read!

Solid 4 star read.  It is important we educate our young population of life and the fact that there are consequences for every action we do.  What a great job this author did and I appreciated every word on the page so much!

Book Review: Brief Chronicle Of Another Stupid Heartbreak @Netgalley #YoungAdult #Heartbreak #YoungLove #Friendship #BookWorm #MomsWhoRead #Reading

Thank you to Netgalley and Inkyard Press for my advance reader copy of Brief Chronicle Of Another Stupid Heartbreak in exchange for my honest review!  Yes, this was released in April…yes, I just got around to it now.  My apologies!  Better late than never!

BriefChronicle

Meet Lu.  A whiny, eighteen year old who thinks life is horrible because her boyfriend broke up with her.  Ever since her boyfriend broke up with her, she can’t write.  This is a huge problem because she writes for a popular online blog that is connected to a scholarship for college.  Without it, she can’t go.

Her column is about love.  Think Sex & The City vibe column.  She has written about her love and about what she hears around her.  She meets a cute young man on a park bench and ends up eavesdropping on his conversation with his girlfriend where they break up.  This gives Lu the fantastic idea to write about couples that break up before they go off to college.

Honestly, this whole book is Lu going on and on and on AND ON about how she can’t write and how if she could just write about Cal and his girlfriend she will be set!  Does she start to fall for Cal?  Come on now…what do you think?  Seriously though, I could barely handle Lu and all of her pity me attitude.  Even her best friend gets tired of her crap.

This is truly a young adult novel.  I think if 18 year old me read this, I’d be like YAAAAASSSS GIRL YAAAAASSSSSS.  But the 30-something me is like, get over it.  Haha.  Keeping in mind that she truly drove me bonkers with her whiny self, I am going to rate this book twice…because again, 18 year old me would have fawned over this and been like, ugh, why can’t anyone feel for Lu.

4 stars for the 21 and under crowd.  3 stars for the over 21 crowd.  Why?  This book truly will resonate with the younger crowd who is going off to college.  They will have all the feels for this read.  I just…don’t.  Not that it wasn’t a well written book, it was, it’s just I wanted to duct tape Lu’s mouth shut, hahaha.  The overall message of the book was good and in the end, I am happy how everything turned out.  Have you read this one??

Book Review: The Devil’s Apprentice @K_B_Andersen #Fantasy #Hell #Devil #YoungAdult #ReadMe #BookWorm

FULL DISCLOSURE: I was contacted by the author and asked if I would read & give my honest review of the book in exchange for a free copy.  All thoughts & opinions are my own.  I was hesitant to accept this offer as this book is outside of my usual wheelhouse of books I read, but I felt like taking a chance.

TheDevilsApprentice

The imagery this book has is unreal.  It is such a unique approach to what goes on in the under world I was absolutely fascinated at Andersen’s take on Hell.  From different creatures to unbroken promises to how Lucifer came to be the Devil, it was all awesome.

This is a young adult novel that I feel that adults can enjoy.  Our main character is Philip, a young 13 year old boy…who is a GOOD boy.  He is being picked on by the class bully and in an unfortunate accident, ends up at the gates of Hell (instead of the bully).

A huge mistake has been made.  Lucifer is looking for a successor and ends up with an angel on his doorstep instead of a rotten devil.  Lucifer decides to get Philip ready to be a devil and starts his training.  Can someone who is so good and pure turn out to be able to be evil and naughty?  You’ll have to read to find out!

This book would be great for middle school kids and above (provided you’re ok with them reading about Hell, I know not everyone is).  It is a wonderful fantasy novel that has turned me on to the fantasy genre!!  This is what happens when you take a chance on a book…you may end up loving it!

4 star read.  This is part of a series with book 4 coming out in October.  This is perfect for a kid who is looking for something interesting to read…and if you’re worried about it being focused on evil, it’s not.  It has a really good message in it, trust me.  I can’t say more without spoiling it!  Have you read a book that is outside of your typical realm and ended up enjoying it??

Book Review: Little Fires Everywhere @pronounced_ing @penguinpress #MomsWhoRead #Book #BookReview #Reading #BookWorm #ReadMe

Hulu is turning Little Fires Everywhere into a show.  I read Ng’s other book and I didn’t particularly care for it, but everyone said this book was the ish.  OH!  THEY ARE RIGHT!!!

LittleFiresEverywhere

So the book starts with the Richardson’s house on fire.  Not too ominous…except their youngest daughter did it.  Oh yes…it’s addictive right from the get go.  So we start off with a bang and go backwards so we can see what leads the youngest daughter up to setting their house on fire.

The Richardson’s live in Shaker Heights, which is essentially like the perfect Suburbia.  The mother rents out a property they own very cheaply as a means to help those just trying to get by.  Here is where we meet Mia, a starving artist who has moved her way around the country.  Mia ends up working for the Richardson family and her daughter befriends the Richardson children.

Oh. The. Drama.  The children, the adults, the town…oh man.  Every page that turns there’s another little bit of a secret going around and one we get to find out.  What kills me is that when everything blows up…it’s really a case of miscommunication.  I may have been yelling at the characters throughout the book…I really got into this one!

I really enjoyed how we started off knowing the end and we worked our way backwards.  Just how could all of this lead up to a fire.  Why?  Oh…you’ll get those answers.  I honestly think this will make for a GREAT show on Hulu and I cannot wait to watch it.

Amazing 4 star read.  You just get caught up in the drama and as each chapter is told through different points of view you keep reading and reading and reading to see how it all connects.  This one tugged at my heartstrings a lot.  I may have had a tear in my eye at one point in time.  Because in all of the Richardson family drama, the mother’s best friend has her own adoption drama.  Yes…drama all around!  You MUST read this book!!  Have you read this one??

Liebster Award #SundayFunday #Blogger #BookBlog

Thank you to The Literary Elephant for tagging me for the Liebster Award!!  I always find posts like this fun and lets us get to know each other better!!

LiebsterAward

Post info from The Global Aussie:

“The Liebster Award is an award that exists only on the internet and is given to bloggers by other bloggers. The earliest case of the award goes as far back as 2011. Liebster in German means sweetest, kindest, nicest, dearest, beloved, lovely, kind, pleasant, valued, cute, endearing, and welcome.

The award is a way to be discovered but also to connect and support the blogging community. A great idea in promoting your own blog and others. Originally it was given out to blogs with less than 2000 readers but this has slowly lowed as the reward has gained popularity. It is now only 200 readers or less. It’s really an arbitrary number. If you like helping other blogs out go ahead and do it regardless of its size. If you are returning, the submission for the award can be found here.

Rules:

  • Say thank you to the person who has nominated you for the Award.
  • Answer the 11 questions the person has asked you
  • Nominate 11 people
  • Ask the people who you have nominated 11 questions

My Answers To Emily’s (The Literary Elephant) Questions

  1. What’s a book you LOVED but have never reread?  Are you sitting down for this?  I have never reread a book.  What I love most about reading is the surprise that comes with the end of the book…I hate rewatching movies too (except a select few).  My mantra is if I know what happens, what’s the point in it?
  2. Is there a genre (or subgenre) you tried recently and realized you’ve been missing out on and/or should read more often?  I recently just read a fantasy young adult book (review coming Tuesday) and it is a genre I’ve never read before, but I LOVED it!!!  I really got in to the story!  I’ve always stayed away from fantasy but after this book, I’ll be checking out more books from this genre!
  3. How often do you visit your local library?  Weekly.  I have been having my kids read semi-nightly and they enjoy it as long as they have a fresh stack of books to choose from.  I’ve really been into my library’s ebooks too so if you count that, more than once a week!
  4. What are your most and least favorite things (one each) about where you live?  I’m in a tourist town!  I love it because everyone wants to visit and you can always find something fun to do.  I hate it because all the good stuff is overpriced and in the high tourist areas that no local wants to venture too, haha.  At least unlike other tourist towns I can go about my regular day and not be affected by tourists…another plus!!
  5. Is there a book you want to read eventually, just to say you’ve read it?  War and Peace…I feel like I would be bored out of my mind, but I could say I read it!!
  6. What’s the best weather for an afternoon of reading?  I love reading outside so a cloudy/partly cloudy day in the low 80s-mid 70s.
  7. What book are you most anticipating with a far out publication date (or no date announced yet)?  What Happens In Paradise by Elin Hilderbrand…ok, so the release date is close by…October, but I have been waiting a YEAR for this.  I am also waiting for the third book in this series to be released, hopefully, in fall of 2020.  I should never have read that first book in the series so soon after its release hahahaha.
  8. Buddy reads or readathons, and why?  I love reading books with friends because then I have someone to talk about the book with!!  That makes it so much more fun!
  9. If you had to write/blog under a pseudonym, what would you pick?  Interesting question!!  I’m stumped!  I would probably use my initials and come up with a snazzy last name, but then I’d feel like I was too much like D.M. Pulley (my initials are D.M. haha).  Maybe I’d go with Renee, the name I picked for myself in French class!
  10. Would you feel satisfied or disappointed to actually reach the end of your TBR?  Heaven’s gates would open and the angels would sing!!!!
  11. Pet pictures! Or a picture of your favorite real-life creature from anywhere in the world.CharlieMy Charlie.  We’ve had him for 13 years now, rescued from the pound.  He’s our grumpy old man.  I don’t have a picture sans children with our other dog, he’s too wild for a still solo shot, haha.  So this is what you’ll get!

Book Review: Please Send Help… @gabydunn @AllisonRaskin @WednesdayBooks @MacMillanUSA #YoungAdult #LGBQT #College #EMail #Text #BookWorm #MomsWhoRead

Yaaaaaas, you guys may remember when I reviewed I Hate Everyone But You, and now I had my library order the second book, Please Send Help…yay!  I was the FIRST patron to have this one!!

PleaseSendHelp

Once again this book follows the format of Gen and Ava communicating  via text messages and e-mails.  You would be able to read this book without reading the first book, they only reference a few things which you get the context of without having to read the book.  But you should really read the first book too because the growth they experience between their first year of college and now their lives AFTER college is awesome!

Our Gen and Ava are growing up.  Both are navigating their first jobs after college.  Ava has moved from California to New York and is an intern at a big late night show.  Gen has moved to Florida and is writing for a small town newspaper.  Oooooh, the mischief each one gets into.

It is refreshing to see friendships stand the test of time and distance.  Gen and Ava are more like sisters than best friends.  I loved how this story flowed and I enjoyed where Gen and Ava end up…I can’t say where because that will give it away.  But…YAY!

My favorite part of this book is the realness.  This book tackles the stigma of having an STD straight on.  These two are genuine and honest with each other.  They don’t hold anything back and aren’t afraid to step on each other’s toes.  I can only imagine the authors sitting on their lap tops in the same room as they go back and forth with their banter while they write.

Fun 4 star book.  This is such a fun and unique book that has a storyline you can’t help but get sucked into.  What is that storyline?  Life.  We know where each girl stands and where they want to go and you can’t help but root them on and keep turning the pages to find out what happens next.  I truly hope the authors contemplate another book where they are navigating the next steps in their lives!
