Top 5 Things I’m Enjoying In Isolation #MomsWhoRead #Reading #Quarantine #QuarantineLife

I discovered this meme via Kristin @ Kristin Kraves Books. This is hosted by Shanah at Bionic Book Worm. The topic this week is 5 Things You’re Enjoying While In Isolation!

Netflix

I have become obsessed…yes…OBSESSED with Korean dramas and Netflix is my gateway to this heaven. It all started with Crash Landing On You and now I just can’t stop!!!!

Fortnite

Little bit of my guilty pleasure here, haha. It’s fun to just turn it on whenever throughout the day and get a game or two in.

Creative Cooking

It has been fun to get in the kitchen and throw things together. This was dinner last night…heavily influenced by my new kdrama obsession, haha. I just googled potatoes in ramen and decided I would go for broke adding potatoes, corn, spam, and egg to my ramen. It was delicious! Who knew egg and ramen would be AMAZING!

Daily Showers

Hear me out on this one…I am able to wake up, linger around for a little bit, and then shower and get dressed. It is at a slow, snail pace. I can enjoy my shower, rock out to music, there is no time table to when I need to be done with my shower! I have found that this has been my saving grace…getting up, showering, and getting dressed like I’m going somewhere. This has helped me stay motivated and stay in a good frame of mind. I did try not to do this one day and that day was HORRIBLE!

Family Group Text

This is probably the most enjoyable part of my day. I am in a large family group text with my brother, dad, aunt, and grandparents. It. Is. Hilarious. You never know what anyone will say at any given time. It’s the little bit I didn’t know I needed.

What are some things that you have been enjoying while in isolation????

My Public Library @hendersonlibs #ReadMe #SavingMoney #Library

I know most public libraries are closed right now, especially in a time we would be using them the most. My public library still has ematerial available and has even kicked up their ematerials during this time. My library also does something a little cool too…

At the bottom of every receipt when you check out physical books, it tells you how much you’ve saved by using your library card. It does not keep track for the entire year, just each visit, so I’ve decided to document how much I save in a year through some posts!!

I use the library a lot for books for my kids. It’s a quick and easy way to throw some variety at them and keep them wanting to read all the time. Thankfully before they closed I went to the library and panic borrowed for my kids, haha, so they’ve had a fresh library while they’ve been at home!

I haven’t been using the library much this year…I’ve only had 5 visits. I have used a lot of ematerial, but those aren’t counted in any mathematical figures (darn it). So to date here are the list of totals I’ve had…

  • 2020 Totals
    • $53.98
    • $27.54
    • $35.98
    • $82.85
    • $252.45

That makes for a grand total of…$452.80 saved this year simply by using my local library!!!!

Does your library do anything like this?? How much have you saved by using your local library??

Bibliotherapy @BuzzFeed #Books #Therapy #MomsWhoRead #ReadMe #BookBlog #Reading

I came across this article published on February 6, 2020 in which Clare Aston, self proclaimed book lover, tried out bibliotherapy.

What is bibliotherapy?

Bibliotherapy, according to the dictionary, “is the use of books as therapy in the treatment of mental or psychological disorders.” It is often a therapeutic and cost effective approach to help ones mental health.

In the article Clare gives us some background on what she is going through, how her session went, and the books that were recommended to her. It was pretty interesting and insightful. She does give a link so if you feel inclined to try it you can; however, the therapy is located in Australia…

Here is the link to read the article, all in all it was pretty interesting!

What are your thoughts on bibliotherapy? Would you try it??

Rest In Peace Mary Higgins Clark

I want to take a brief moment and pay homage to the first author I fell head over heels for…Mary Higgins Clark. The news of her passing has me reflecting on my memories with her.

My grandmother introduced me to her work at a fairly young age…I was still in elementary school (I have always loved mysteries). I spent many a summer with her on trips and visits and we would swap her paperback books. I have read a countless number of her books and enjoyed the time with my grandparents. I would like to share with you the heartfelt letter from her Facebook page. My sincerest condolences to her family…

A message from Carolyn K. Reidy, President & CEO of Simon & Schuster:

It is with great sadness that I write to inform you that Mary Higgins Clark died earlier today in Naples, Florida, at the age of 92. The cause was complications of old age.

It is impossible to overestimate the importance of Mary’s contribution to our success, and her role in the modern history of Simon & Schuster. Beginning in 1975 with the publication of WHERE ARE THE CHILDREN, each of her 56 books has been a bestseller. There are more than 100 million copies of her books in print in the United States; they are international bestsellers and have been translated into every major and many less well-known languages.

But these storied publishing accomplishments tell only a small part of the larger story that is Mary Higgins Clark. She was, simply, a remarkable woman who overcame an early life of hardship and challenges, never doubting her ability as a natural-born storyteller (and she was one for the ages), and who persevered through trial and rejection until she at last achieved her Holy Grail of being a published author.

Those of us who are fortunate to have worked with Mary—and at Simon & Schuster, that is multitudes—know her as a person of tremendous loyalty and dedication: In this day and age it is exceedingly rare for an author, especially one as prized as Mary, to remain with a single publisher for an entire forty-five-year career.

She was similarly devoted to her readers, until very recently going out of her way to meet them while on tour for every one of her books, and drawing tremendous energy and satisfaction from her interactions with them, even though she long ago could have pulled back from that part of being an author. She was, too, a generous member of the literary community, especially toward new authors, and was well known beyond the publishing world for her support of innumerable philanthropic and civic causes.

Of course, no one here has been associated with Mary longer than Michael Korda, Editor-in-Chief Emeritus of Simon & Schuster, who says:

“Mary and I have been dear friends, and worked together since 1975, during which time we never had a cross word between us, which surely sets something of a record for author-editor relationships.

“She was unique. Nobody ever bonded more completely with her readers than Mary did; she understood them as if they were members of her own family. She was always absolutely sure of what they wanted to read—and, perhaps more important, what they didn’t want to read—and yet she managed to surprise them with every book. She was the Queen of Suspense, it wasn’t just a phrase; she always set out to end each chapter on a note of suspense, so you just had to keep reading. It was at once a gift, but also the result of hard work, because nobody worked harder than Mary did on her books to deliver for her readers. She was also, unfailingly, cheerful under pressure, generous, good humored and warm-hearted, the least ‘temperamental’ of bestselling authors, and the most fun to be around. I feel privileged to have enjoyed forty-five years of her friendship, and saddened that I will no longer be able to pick up the phone and hear her say, ‘Michael, I think I’ve figured out how to make this story work.’ She was a joy to work with, and to know.”

Yes, she was deservedly known as the Queen of Suspense, but in our building we have long and fondly thought of her as the First Lady of Simon & Schuster. Today we did not just lose an author, but a true and well-loved member of the Simon & Schuster family. I will miss her tremendously, both on a personal and professional level, but we all can be grateful and proud for having had the privilege of being her publisher these many years, and thankful for all she has meant to her millions of readers and for her kindness and service to many generations of authors.

Please join me in offering heartfelt condolences to Mary’s children and extended family.

First Line Fridays: Husband Material @emilybelden @harlequinbooks @Netgalley #FLF #MomsWhoRead #FirstLine #Books #ReadMe

As always First Line Friday comes courtesy of Hoarding Books Blog.  I discovered this magic thanks to Crystal at Must Love Reviews.  I am catching up on yet another book on Netgalley (look at me go)!  Husband Material by Emily Belden!

Well, that’s a first. And I’m not talking about the fact that I brought a date to a wedding I’m pretty sure didn’t warrant me a plusone.

So far this book has been an interesting read…I cannot wait to finish it and post my review for everyone!!  What are you reading today??

A Saturday Ramble…I’m back…really! #OwningUp #BookBlog #Blogger #Books

Remember that post saying hey, I’m back?  Then I kinda really wasn’t?  Yeah…I think I jumped the gun.  But seriously, I have my 2020 calendar printed out and I have blogs typed up and scheduled to post.

I AM BACK!

I did promise myself a few things that have helped me get here…

1) I am not going to go crazy over YOUR posts.  You heard me right…YOUR posts.  What I mean is, I would read all your posts and go CRAZY with my TBR pile.  I would put my books on hold because all the books you were talking about sounded awesome…and they were awesome.  I started to feel like I would be out of the loop if I wasn’t reading all these latest releases right now.  I realize now, who cares?  If I just read all the books everyone else is talking about then I’m not sharing any different books with the world and isn’t that the point of a book blog?  To find great, different books?  Sure, there will always be new releases I’m dying to read and that I will, but I am determined to shrink down the amount of books I have now stashed around the house and dwindle them down…and then buy more, hahahaha.  I am going to promise myself to keep the books you all talk about on my TBR list and then get to them eventually.  Seriously…it has taken a load off!

2) I am not going to kill myself over my blog content.  There are times when I read a lot and times when I read a little.  It’s called life.  I wanted a post EVERY DAY.  That isn’t going to happen anymore.  Sure, it’s something to strive for and if it happens, great.  If I go a day or two without a post, awesome.  I’m not going to look at my stats anymore.

3) I’m going to dedicated a night, one day a week, where it’s me and my computer and work on the blog.  I will use the app to give myself some ideas for blogs and read your posts, but my giving myself one dedicated night where that is all I do, phew, I feel good now.  I get done what I get done and that’s that.  I am behind on writing NINE reviews from last year…and I will get to them when I get to them.  It was ten but I managed to sneak one in before this post.

4) I am not going to worry about reading books my co-workers give me right away.  Before I would let them take place of books I had on deck.  Now they go below deck and I read them after the ones I had planned to read.  I always keep the book I’m reading and the next book I want to read on my stand and these books would plop right above the book I planned.  You don’t realize how sometimes this can take the wind out of motivation to read.  It’s crazy.  And guess what…no one cares if I bring the book in 5 days or 20 days.  We just pass them along in a big circle and they make it back to the original person in a few months.  Why am I stressing?  Stress no more!

It is amazing how sometimes so simple as a blog can make you feel so overwhelmed.  I love reading and I love the book blogging world.  To be fair, I was thrown back in to the middle of my work year with no warning and it took awhile to figure things out and get things to the way I wanted them to be…all the while I was like…books, blog, books, blog.  Now that I’m settled back in, I’m ready.  Truly ready after sitting down with myself and setting some new rules/boundaries.  Side note: my Netgalley shelf is out of control and I am determined to shrink it.  Talk about a whoops…haha…no more requesting until I get through it…now THAT is some motivation!!  Haha.

Have you set any rules up for yourself or gone through something similar with your blog?

Book Review: Christmas In Winter Hill @AuthorCarlson @RevellBooks #Christmas #MomsWhoRead #HolidayReads

I took advice from Literary Elephant and read a book that I wanted to read…I pushed aside everything I was in the middle of and picked up this book that well, ended up being a few days overdue back to my library (sorry patron who had this on hold!!!!).

ChristmasInWinterHill

This was such a CUTE read.  A mother and her daughter move to a new town in a new state to try and start a fresh life.  Going from the Arizona desert to the Washington snow is a huge change and thankfully the daughter is loving the prospect of snow!  Things aren’t going so great for Krista, the mom, who finds out her new town is obsessed with Christmas…a time she tries to avoid.

Not only is she thrown in to this small town who goes crazy for Christmas, her new apartment is small and dingy, she has no car and has to find time to buy one, and she may have to be the Grinch as the new city manager and squash some of the Christmas celebrations.

Krista is also single…and meets a single dad…will romance bloom?  Will she end up being the Grinch?  Will she be run out of town?  My only question…when is Hallmark going to turn this in to a holiday movie?!?!?  LOVED it!!!!  It is everything and more I want in a holiday read!  It was quick and I loved everything!  Truly, Krista’s daughter makes this book everything it is…that sweet, sweet girl!

5 stars because I can and because I love Christmas books.  Honestly, if you love watching Hallmark Christmas movies you will agree with me and LOVE this book.  Who knows…maybe Krista will even end up looking forward to Christmas!  Oh oh oh you’ll just have to read to find out!!

Hello! Where Did I Go? #blogging #reading #MIA

Well…I have mentioned it in previous posts that I have been out of work since July with a thumb injury.  I went back right at the end of October/beginning of November and things have been cr-a-zy.

As soon as I got back to work I was immediately behind. I was met with a wall of paperwork and a list of things that I *HOPE* I can get done before we go on Winter Break!!

Since I have been back at work…I have not read a single book. Not a one. I have numerous late fines for books from the library I thought I would read and nope. I have been working on How To Hack A Heartbreak and Anything For You for the past month. Not that they are bad…I’m in to them, I’m just so overwhelmed!!!!!

I’m also going to physical therapy two times a week so I don’t make it home until late and when I do get home, it’s time for dinner and I need some unwind time. I just need to find my mojo back. I thought I would get a little more done over this Thanksgiving break…but, I’m still not sure I will get back on track. I am going to TRY my best to write the SEVEN book reviews I’m behind on. Ugh. I just can’t believe how behind I am!

If you have any tips for how I can get my reading mojo back, I’m all ears. I think I’m going to forgo all my library books and work on the stacks I have at home. The library stacks staring at me aren’t helping. I have plenty to read in my physical library and Netgalley so…there isn’t a lack of books there! Hopefully I can get through that Elin Hilderbrand Winter Street series I said I would this season!!! I promise to be back in a more consistent manner soon!! I miss you all! *muah*

First Line Fridays: Next Level Basic @stassi #FLF #BookWorm #BookQuote #PumpRules #Handbook #MomsWhoRead

As always First Line Friday comes courtesy of Hoarding Books Blog.  I discovered this magic thanks to Crystal at Must Love Reviews.  This week I am featuring a book I am just cracking open…

NextLevelBasicFLF.png

HECK YES!  FINALLY I got my hands on Stassi Schroeder’s book!  I cannot wait to read everything in here.  I am a huge fan of Vanderpump Rules and all things related to that show…anyone else a huge Pump Rules fan?!?!?

Slighty Off Topic Saturday: Recent Book Reviews #StarRatings #Book #Reviews #Reading

The first thing I want to address quickly has been my lack of consistent posts…as I have casually mentioned I got hurt at work.  My left hand has been in a cast for the past month and well…it sucks typing with ONE hand.  It makes for very slow typing.  I have had a lot of bones done to some posts so I was able to keep up for a bit…now I’m slowing down.  I’m trying not to let it get it to me!!  If you don’t see a daily post, this is why.  I also haven’t been on here as much…with only having one good hand, it takes me longer to do everything, haha.  I promise I am back tracking and reading all of your posts!!

I have been realizing lately that the majority of my reviews have been 4 or 5 stars.  How is this happening???  Oh, I know…

YOU

What do I mean by you?  Well, I follow quite a few of you on here.  There are a select few of you where I know when you rate it highly, I will love it.  There are also some books that EVERYONE seems to talk about in a positive light, it’s hard not to want to read it.  So…I’ve been reading books that you have all been suggesting and wow…I have not picked up a bad one in a long time!!!  I have a stack of 8 books from my local library on my shelf right now…all because you’ve raved about them!!  You guys do a STELLAR job at book recommendations!

Most of the time when I end up with a 3 star rating it’s because it’s an advance copy book…I’ve received it blindly (except for a blurb) and no one else has been blogging about it yet.  I’ll take the occasional meh book if that means I can keep the majority great!!

At first I thought there was something wrong with me and then I realized…I’m just reading books that have been blogged about!  I’m not blindly picking…I’m going hey, that review sounds amazing, I need to read that one.  So, I feel there is really NOTHING wrong with the fact that all my books are rated higher because they’ve essentially all been vetted.  I absolutely love how I love every book I pick up, it makes reading that much more fun!

I’m sure the random people on Goodreads don’t see it that way, but oh well.  If you don’t like my choice of books or rating choices, well then our tastes are different and you probably shouldn’t follow me anyway.

Let’s chat…do you ever feel the same way I do??  How can you possibly always give such high ratings??  Should I branch out and read more books that aren’t talked about?  What do you think??
