Welcome to Thursday Quotables.  Books Kat Likes has joined in on the weekly fun and came up with this great description of what this is…

This feature is the place to highlight a great quote, line, or passage discovered during your reading each week. Whether it’s something funny, startling, gut-wrenching, or just really beautifully written, Thursday Quotables is where my favorite lines will be, and you’re invited to join in! Created by Lisa, over at Bookshelf Fantasies.

You should join in too!  Leave the link to your Thursday Quotable post below and I will make sure to check it out!!  Or just leave a comment with a quote from a book that has struck you!

Today is a line that pulled me in from a book I read recently…

“And as we all know,” Lillo said, “walls don’t keep anything out for long. But they do keep your weakest parts in.”

Woah.  #truth

Have you read this one?  I actually won my copy from a Goodreads giveaway (yes, people really win them, keep entering).  I look forward to passing this one through my reading circle!

Book Review: Eleanor Oliphant Is Completely Fine @GailHoneyman @PenguinBooks @PenguinUKBooks #4.5stars #CharacterGrowth #AcceptingDifferences

I was lucky enough to snatch a copy of this at Goodwill.  It has been sitting on my shelf for way too long…a colleague reached out to me and asked if I had read this book as she just had and was dying to talk about it.  Thankfully I had it on hand and immediately started it…and then spent all day reading because I could not get enough.

So here I am, special education teacher, assuming Eleanor is on the spectrum.  She has poor social skills, set routines, and does not understand life’s nuances.  Her co-workers mock her and make fun of her and she really isn’t all that aware as she is that socially inept.  We do gather that she has survived a house fire (albeit with scars on her face) when she was a little girl and has a dysfunctional mother who berates her constantly.

Meet Raymond.  He is a new employee at her office and they start to form a bond after they witness an elderly man have a medical episode and assist him.  Raymond is an absolute doll and helps Eleanor become more social.  I wish Eleanor would have eyes for him; however, she has a crush on a musician she saw play once and is convinced he’s the one.

I did not expect so much character growth!  Eleanor grew up with a LOT stacked against her.  After the fire she was placed in protective custody and bounced from foster home to foster home.  No one nurtured her.  No one cared.  When Eleanor has a rough time accepting her fate with her musician it is Raymond who comes to the rescue because he cares.  What a friend.  Eleanor even calls him her friend!  Eleanor in the beginning of this book and at the end are two different people.  I am so proud of her with how much she has allowed herself to grow!  Eleanor has overcome a LOT in her short 30 years time including abuse, trauma, and betrayal.  Truly remarkable writing by Honeyman!

This is a must read 4.5 star read.  I would have loved a small epilogue because, well, I can’t say, it will ruin the progression of the book if I do.  This book took me by surprise and made me feel so emotional.  Raymond took the time to treat Eleanor like a human being, which is something we all should aspire to do with every human we meet.  There is no need for her office co-workers to treat her in the manner they do.  I am glad Raymond was there to step up and be a friend.  If you haven’t read this, don’t put it off any longer.  Read this now!  Have you read this one?  What did you think?  Let’s talk about it!

Questions to Answer

  1. What’s your favorite place that you’ve ever visited? – Tough question.  I have 2.  My zen place, my most favorite place in the world is York Beach, Maine.  I started going there as a baby and spent many summers there.  It bums me out that I live so far away from it now.  It is just a special, special place for me.  On the flip side, one of my favorite places I have been to that I would LOVE to go back to is…Barcelona, Spain!  We stopped here on our family trip last summer and I just, I could have spent a solid week here and still needed more time.  It is the coolest place to go explore!
  2. Do the number of bookshelves that you use hold all of the books that you own and/or what do you do with overflow books? – I don’t actually own any bookshelves.  *gasp*  The majority of my books go in a stand we have from IKEA in our living room.  My books are in here along with my kids’ books.  I am overflowing so I put books in my entertainment center and then in drawers of a dresser too.  I have little hiding spots all over the place, haha.  I really should put some shelves in my kids’ rooms to move their books out and then I’m pretty sure I could fit all the physical books I own.  I don’t keep my books, I share them with my “reading circle” and then donate them to a Little Free Library when I’m done, hence why this stand works!
  3. Which book-to-film adaptation do you wish would be redone? – This is seriously one of the best and hardest questions…I tend to read a book with the purpose of watching the movie and then fall in love with the book and refuse to watch the movie, haha.  I do wish they would remake The Kissing Booth.  It upset so much how they changed the main character (from a popular, everyone loves her girl to a one friend, loner loser girl).  I didn’t care for the book and then I watched the movie and got so angry that it made me LOVE the book, haha.  Go figure!
  4. Name a story you loved as a child/teen that never gets old.  – The Witch Of Blackbird Pond.  I even made up a little jingle with the title and still sing it from time to time, haha.  I just remember loving this book to pieces.
  5. [weird question] Which of your favorite characters would win a karaoke contest, and with what song? – You know who would?  Eleanor Oliphant because Raymond would coach her and she just wouldn’t care.  I have a lot of faith in my girl.  She would rock “Born This Way” by Lady Gaga too.  I know I’d be there cheering for her!

About me

  1. I have jumped out of an airplane.  The most exhilarating moment was that free fall.  The leisurely glide down to the ground did nothing for me, haha.  My aunt and I always try to find something adventurous to do for our birthdays.  We have jumped off a building before too!
  2. I have 2 master’s degrees.  I am very passionate about special education and the kids I teach and I hope one day to make some headway and get some changes rolling for the most severe population that often gets neglected!
  3. I like to go fishing.  I never fished until a few years ago when I finally caved and tried it with my husband.  As much as I would love a book in my hand next to the water, there is something calming about fishing that I just love!  I don’t go nearly often enough!

  5. [weird question] If you were the President/Leader of your country, what color socks would you wear?

Fave posts

  • One of my favorite posts is the review I did for Book Review: Between Hello & Goodbye.  This book was such an emotional read for me which takes place in York Beach, Maine (my favorite place in the world).  Sometimes books fall into our laps at the right time to read and this was one of them.  This is the most heartfelt review I have ever written (and most successful).
  • My Summer Reading Stack was a fun Top Tuesday post.  I have read 2 of these books so far.  I truly believe I will finish most of these by the time September rolls around…*fingers crossed*
  • Blind Date With A Book was a fun one because I finally had the opportunity to participate in one.  It was soooo exciting to pick out some books with just the description (and terrifying).  Thankfully they both look like great books.  I got them off a reading group on Facebook so if you’re interested let me know and I can get you a link to join the group!

Thanks again to Literary Elephant for the tag!  I’m going to steal her concluding message so here it is…I really enjoy the tags/awards that look different every time you see them; there’s so much room for creativity here.  If you haven’t tried it yet, now is your chance!  And even if you have, this is a great post to repeat with different questions and answers.  Happy blogging, all!

Book Review: The McAvoy Sisters Book of Secrets @MollyOKWrites @HarlequinBooks #FamilyDrama #Novel #MustRead #5stars

Thank you to Netgalley and Graydon House Publishing for my advanced reader’s copy of The McAvoy Sisters Book of Secrets. This book is set to be released next week and if you pre-order a copy now you’ll have it on release day! Spoiler alert: it was a 5 star read for me.

Family secrets are the main event in this book. We have two sisters who used to be close and now never speak to each other. A mother who keeps walking off to a house and yelling at everyone around her and a young teenage girl who looks a lot more like her aunt than her mother…intrigued?

I love the journey each character went on. Every woman in this book grows and finds herself. The teenage daughter is on a path of trouble. She thinks everyone is against her and no one will treat her like an adult and tell her the truth. When the truth unravels out…well…no true spoilers from me! Lindy, the trouble maker sister, comes back in to town when her old crush from high school (now town police officer) calls her at her mother’s request. The mother has had “brain events” and is not quite herself. Lindy comes to town and helps out. Enter Delia. The sister who stayed in town and took on the family business and cares for their ailing mother all while raising her own family.

Will the two sisters be able to mend their relationship? After being driven apart can the two sisters even stand to be in the same room together? Delia has a lot of years of pent up anger and depression. Lindy has a lot of years of failed relationships and dead end jobs. The mother is realizing that her bouts of confusion are occurring more frequently and that she is taking things out on the wrong people. Delia’s daughter ends up finding out that her mother isn’t so bad after all…but can she turn her attitude around in time before it’s too late?

This is a must read 5 star read, but I already told you that. Each character comes with their own personal conflicts AND resolutions. It was absolutely heart wrenching for me to read about the mother and watch her have her good days and her bad days. The mother ends up taking the fall for not teaching her girls how to cope with things that happen in life, and we find out the secrets they keep. I am shocked I did not cry while reading this, but I wanted to.

The thought that went in to each character is appreciated and well thought out. The book is told from the perspectives of the mother, Lindy, Delia, and the daughter. What I found most appealing is how DIFFERENT each character sounded. The daughter sounded as if a 16 year old mad at the world girl was talking. The mother really sounded like someone who was trying to have her wits about her, but just couldn’t quite do it. The strife in the sisters’ voices was remarkable. It was so easy to picture each character and the flow was great. Pick this book up once it’s on sale on July 16th!

Sunday Funday: Goodreads Challenge Update @Goodreads #Goodreads #Reading #BookWorm

July 2nd is the official middle date of the calendar year…so pardon me that I’m 5 days late with my middle of the year update for my Goodreads Challenge ;).

I set a goal for myself of 52 books, or 1 book a week.  Sometimes life gets busy and it takes me a few weeks to read a book and other times I’m 3 books down a week if I have time off work.  I wanted to give myself a challenge and a book a week is a solid one I think I’ll be able to hit…so how have I done so far?

ReadingChallenge2019halfway

Now, I won’t change my goal even if I hit it.  I will be ecstatic and will think about upping my goal for next year; however, if I can accomplish what I set out to do early, then woo hoo!  I won’t pressure myself into trying to hit a secondary goal.

Did you set any reading goals for the year?  How are you doing with them??

Top Of The TBR: July 6th

I stumbled across this thanks to Literary Elephant.  I love this idea and I’m jumping on board!!  Here is her description of Top Of The TBR…

But what is Top of the TBR? Good question. It’s a weekly post that will showcase any new books I’ve added to my Goodreads TBR recently, with a short explanation of why each title caught my interest. I’ll aim for 5-10 books per post; in weeks that I’ve added more than that, I’ll hold some back, and in weeks that I don’t have enough, I’ll include titles I haven’t discussed yet. Each title will be linked back to its Goodreads page for anyone interested in exploring further, as I’m not a fan of copy/pasting synopses. Anyone who wants to take part in this series with me is absolutely welcome! Please link back to any of my Top of the TBR posts so I can see what you’re reading!

Personally, my Goodreads TBR is filled with books that I have entered giveaways for.  My TRUE TBR list is on Amazon.  It’s horrible…they send me alerts when books on that list are on sale, haha.  I’ve also been lucky enough to score quite a few on my list for free too!  Yes, I check it every day.  I won’t disclose how many physical books I own that I haven’t read yet and I certainly won’t disclose the amount I have on my Kindle!  I will probably focus on the last 3 books I’ve added to my TBR list.  I will link each one back to Goodreads as well!  Here goes nothing…

TheSecretary

How I found it: Shalini’s Book Reviews

Why I added it: When someone writes a review and says they got goosebumps reading it, my interest is peaked.  The more and more I read the above review, the more and more I am craving this book!

Priority: Low. It is not released in the US yet and I cannot find a date for release.  I will keep it on my list and wait until I see it’s available, but I’m in no rush. I’m used to falling in lust with books that get released in the UK waaaaay before the US, I’m used to it now!

Goodreads

DearWife

How I found it: Facebook advertisement

Why I added it: The cover got me with that tag line!  When I clicked on the link and it said how far will a woman go to escape a person she once loved…I’m in!

Priority: Medium.  This book was just released on June 25th and I have a lot on my plate I still have to read.  Once the summer is over (I’m a huge seasonal reader) and autumn hits, this is a book that will on top of my list!

Goodreads

StolenThings

How I found it: Another Facebook advertisement!

Why I added it:  The description in the ad sucked me in.

Priority: Low.  This will be released on August 20th.  That’s well over a month away.  It’s also priced a little high (for me) for Kindle and hard copy.  I may go to the library for this one.  Either way, it still looks like a good read!

What books are on top of your TBR list???  Maybe I need to add them to mine! 🙂

Have you read this one?  It was such a light, fun read!

Book Review: A Summer Affair @elinhilderbrand @littlebrown @HachetteUS #Adultery #Summer #Love #Life #ElinHilderbrand

I love Elin Hilderbrand.  I have made it my goal to read ALL of her books.  So far, 3 down…23 more to go!  Sometimes you fall in love with an author and you just go with it.  For me, my first taste of Elin was The Perfect Couple and now here I am…loving the love affairs and hanging on to every word!

Adultery is the major theme in this book.  Claire is a married stay at home mother to 4 children who feels trapped.  She gave up her work as a glass blower when she fainted from the heat and went in to pre-term labor with her last child.  She feels guilty that she could have killed her child and feels like her husband is just another child.  Can I get an amen from my fellow mothers out there?  Have we not had times when we felt overwhelmed and underappreciated?!  I digress…

Enter Lockhart.  A married man of a woman that used to be in Claire’s social circle until she drove home from a night out, got into a car wreck due to her intoxication, and was forever changed.  When Lock asks Claire to chair a gala her guilt from not forcing his wife to take a cab weighs heavy and she obliges.  After all, she is the one that knows the latest and biggest rock star on the planet as they used to date.

Both Claire and Lockhart are lonely.  So guess what happens.  I mean, it IS the title of the book.  The book does span over a year’s time, but is heavily focused on the big summer gala.  I do feel for Claire and I think as she works through the affair, she works through her life and ironically, grows as a wife and mother.  I also love the relationship she has with her sister-in-law, a no nonsense, secret keeper, who is there anytime she is needed (even with her own struggles).

So the never do wrong, always abide by the rules Claire, goes on quite the escapade in A Summer Affair.  That is what makes this book a little more exciting.  By the end I felt that every man wants Claire and what a life to live, ha.  I was a little miffed at how it ended, but I guess if it ended another way the book would probably have been another 100 pages at least.  Either way, again, her sister-in-law is the best friend we all want.

4 star read.  It’s Elin guys, you know I love her!  She has a writing style that always peaks my interest.  If adultery is not your thing, don’t read Elin, hahaha.  My favorite part about this book is that it’s a romance without being cheesy.  If you’re up for a tale of what Claire does and if she gets caught in the act or not, read away!  I cannot wait for my next Elin book!!
