2019 Netgalley Reading Challenge @Netgalley #Reading #ARC #BookWorm

So it’s August 1st…the 8th month of the year.  I arrived late to the challenge, didn’t I!  To be fair, I heard about this probably a month or so ago and I made a commitment then to this challenge…I just dragged my feet posting about it!

In case you didn’t know, Netgalley is a website where bloggers and other people can go and get advance copies of books in exchange for their honest opinions!  It’s a neat website!  On to the challenge…

Here is the original post.

This is put on by Reading Between The Pages and I love this idea.  She is the one who turned me on to the challenge she hosts!  Ready for my commitment??

Silver-25 books

I made my reading goal for books this year to be 52, so there’s no way I was going to branch out and go for Gold…in fact, I have slowed down on my requests from Netgalley so I can get through all of them in a timely manner!  I became so inundated!!  I’m all caught up for my August reads, but I still have 1 from April, 1 from May, and 2 from June to read!  YIKES!  Thankfully I only have one scheduled for September, there will be my catch up month!  If I’m counting correctly I’m currently at 16 books on Netgalley for 2019!  I WILL MAKE MY GOAL!  I am determined!!

Anyone else partaking in the Netgalley Challenge????

Book Review: The Girlfriend #MichelleFrances @panmacmillan

This was my first ebook I borrowed from my local library!  I actually wanted to read Michelle Frances’ new book, but it wasn’t available so I went ahead and tried this one!  Side note: the ability to borrow ebooks has become a HUGE distraction from my current TBR pile!

TheGirlfriend

A mother’s intuition is always there.  Laura is the mother of Daniel, her son who is starting his internship as a doctor at the local hospital.  Laura is (unhappily) married and very well off.  Everything is going as well as it can be for Laura until Daniel suddenly becomes infatuated with a new girl.

You could say that Laura becomes the crazy over-protective mother.  No mother things any woman is good enough for their son, it’s just a fact, but is there something off with Cherry, his new girlfriend?  All signs point to Laura is crazy, but we get to see behind the scenes at what is really transpiring.

This is a gripping mystery.  I wouldn’t categorize it as a psychological thriller, but rather a family suspense and mystery novel.  I loved that we saw things from Laura, Cherry, and Daniel.  I felt horribly for Laura in this book…her life was truly apart by the seams and I can’t say I blame her for the drastic measures she ends up taking in this book (that’s all I’ll reveal…you’ll have to read to find out what she does!).  Was it horrible?  Yes, but sometimes a mother has to do what a mother has to do…

4 star read.  What you’re reading for is if anyone will figure out what is going on.  Laura destroys personal relationships over this girlfriend and her career ends up in shambles.  How can one person do this and who is doing it, Laura or Cherry?  Seriously, great read.  I can’t wait to read more by Frances!  This is definitely a book to pick up if you spot it (or borrow from your local library like I did)!

Blog Tour: The Escape Room #EscapeRoomBook @megangoldin @StMartinsPress @Netgalley

TheEscapeRoomMine

Thank you to St. Martin’s Press for the advance copy of the book AND the opportunity to participate in the blog tour!!  I have been given an advanced copy of this book to read and give you my honest opinion on.  I am so lucky to have had this opportunity!

This is one of the most unique books I have read in awhile.  We alternate between 2 settings.  One setting takes place in an elevator where 4 co-workers are drawn together to participate in a team building exercise.  They are called to take part in an escape room and end up in an elevator with clues, trying to decipher them to escape.  The other setting is essentially the adult life of Sara Hall; a woman who used to work with the other 4.  It seems absolutely bizarre at first with each alternating chapter, but it works and throws you around in a loop!

This was filled with such great writing.  I will admit, toward the end I saw where the book was going, but that didn’t stop me from enjoying every second of this book.  I read it so fast because I wanted to know what was going on!  Goldin did a SUPERB job at giving you just enough with each chapter that it made you want to keep going because you had to fill in the pieces to the puzzle!  It almost became a game of, well, let me figure out this escape room puzzle and wait, I want to know more about Sara!  Needless to say I had 2 sleepless nights with this book trying to get it all in!

I really can’t say more about this book without giving too much away.  It’s a unique psychological thriller that will be a chart-topping hit.  This is a must read.  You guys know how obsessive I am over endings and THANK YOU, it’s what I hoped and wanted.  Well, I wouldn’t have mind if, ah, you know I can’t say, but just know it made me smile.  Please, get your hands on this book as soon as possible!  Watch your back in the process…you just don’t know who you can trust!  (St. Martin’s Press has decided to be super kind and has given me access to share with you a preview of the book…scroll down to go around and get a peek at the prologue, don’t forget to get a copy of this ASAP!)

PROLOGUE

It was Miguel who called 911 at 4:07 a.m. on an icy Sunday morning. The young security guard spoke in an unsteady voice, fear disguised by cocky nonchalance.

Miguel had been an aspiring bodybuilder until he injured his back lifting boxes in a warehouse job and had to take night- shift work guarding a luxury office tower in the final stages of construction. He had a muscular physique, dark hair, and a cleft in his chin.

He was conducting a cursory inspection when a scream rang out. At first, he didn’t hear a thing. Hip- hop music blasted through the oversize headphones he wore as he swept his flashlight across the dark recesses of the lobby.

The beam flicked across the classical faces of reproduction Greek busts cast in metal and inset into niches in the walls. They evoked an eerie otherworldliness, which gave the place the aura of a mausoleum.

Miguel paused his music to search for a fresh play list of songs. It was then that he heard the tail end of a muffled scream.

The sound was so unexpected that he instinctively froze. It wasn’t the first time he’d heard strange noises at night, whether it was the screech of tomcats brawling or the whine of construction cranes buffeted by wind. Silence followed. Miguel chided himself for his childish reaction.

He pressed PLAY to listen to a new song and was immediately assaulted by the explosive beat of a tune doing the rounds at the dance clubs where he hung out with friends.

Still, something in the screech he’d heard a moment before rattled him enough for him to be extra diligent.

He bent down to check the lock of the revolving lobby door. It was bolted shut. He swept the flashlight across a pair of still escalators and then, above his head, across the glass- walled mezzanine floor that overlooked the lobby.

He checked behind the long reception desk of blond oak slats and noticed that a black chair was at an odd angle, as if someone had left in a hurry.

A stepladder was propped against a wall where the lobby café was being set up alongside a water fountain that was not yet functional. Plastic- wrapped café tables and chairs were piled up alongside it.

In the far corner, he shone his flashlight in the direction of an elaborate model of the building complex shown to prospective tenants by Realtors rushing to achieve occupancy targets in time for the building’s opening the following month.

The model detailed an ambitious master plan to turn an abandoned ware house district that had been a magnet for homeless people and addicts into a high- end financial and shopping precinct. The first tower was almost finished. A second was halfway through construction.

When Miguel turned around to face the elevator lobby, he was struck by something so incongruent that he pushed his headphones off his head and onto his shoulders.

The backlit green fluorescent light of an elevator switch flickered in the dark. It suggested that an elevator was in use. That was impossible, because he was the only person there.

In the sobriety of the silent echo that followed, he convinced himself once again that his vague sense of unease was the hallucination of a fatigued mind. There was nobody in the elevator for the simple reason that the only people on- site on weekends were the security
guards. Two per shift. Except to night, Miguel was the only one on duty.

When Stu had been a no- show for his shift, Miguel figured he’d manage alone. The construction site was fenced off with towering barbed- wire fences and a heavy- duty electric gate. Nobody came in or out until the shift ended.

In the four months he’d worked there, the only intruders he’d encountered were feral cats and rats scampering across construction equipment in the middle of the night. Nothing ever happened during the night shift.

That was what he liked about the job. He was able to study and sleep and still get paid. Sometimes he’d sleep for a couple of hours on the soft leather lobby sofa, which he found preferable to the lumpy stretcher in the portable office where the guards took turns resting between patrols. The CCTV cameras hadn’t been hooked up yet, so he could still get away with it.

From the main access road, the complex looked completed. It had a driveway entry lined with young maples in planter boxes. The lobby had been fitted out and furnished to impress prospective tenants who came to view office space.

The second tower, facing the East River, looked unmistakably like a construction site. It was wrapped with scaffolding. Shipping containers storing building materials were arranged like colorful Lego blocks in a muddy field alongside idle bulldozers and a crane.

Miguel removed keys from his belt to open the side entrance to let himself out, when he heard a loud crack. It whipped through the lobby with an intensity that made his ears ring.

Two more cracks followed. They were unmistakably the sound of gunshots. He hit the ground and called 911. He was terrified the shooter was making his way to the lobby but cocky enough to cover his fear with bravado when he spoke.

“Something bad’s going down here.” He gave the 911 dispatcher the address. “You should get cops over here.”

Miguel figured from the skepticism in the dispatcher’s cool voice that his call was being given priority right below the doughnut run.

His heart thumped like a drum as he waited for the cops to arrive. You chicken shit, he berated himself as he took cover behind a sofa. He exhaled into his shirt to muffle the sound of his rapid breathing. He was afraid he would give away his position to the shooter.

A wave of relief washed over him when the lobby finally lit up with a hazy blue strobe as a police car pulled in at the taxi stand. Miguel went outside to meet the cops.

“What’s going on?” An older cop with a thick gut hanging over his belted pants emerged from the front passenger seat.

“Beats me,” said Miguel. “I heard a scream. Inside the building. Then I heard what I’m pretty sure were gunshots.”

“How many shots?” A younger cop came around the car to meet him, snapping a wad of gum in his mouth.

“Two, maybe three shots. Then nothing.”

“Is anyone else around?” The older cop’s expression was hidden under a thick gray mustache.

“They clear out the site on Friday night. No construction workers. No nobody. Except me. I’m the night guard.”

“Then what makes you think there’s a shooter?”

“I heard a loud crack. Sure sounded like a gunshot. Then two more. Came from somewhere up in the tower.”

“Maybe construction equipment fell? That possible?”

A faint thread of red suffused Miguel’s face as he contemplated the possibility that he’d panicked over nothing. They moved into the lobby to check things out, but he was feeling less confident than when he’d called 911. “I’m pretty sure they—” He stopped speaking as they all heard the unmistakable sound of a descending elevator.

“I thought you said there was nobody here,” said the older cop.

“There isn’t.”

“Could have fooled me,” said the second cop. They moved through to the elevator lobby. A light above the elevator doors was flashing to indicate an elevator’s imminent arrival. “Someone’s here.”

“The building opens for business in a few weeks,” said Miguel. “Nobody’s supposed to be here.”

The cops drew their guns from their holsters and stood in front of the elevator doors in a shooting stance— slightly crouched, legs apart. One of the cops gestured furiously for Miguel to move out of the way. Miguel stepped back. He hovered near an abstract metal sculpture set into the wall at the dead end of the elevator lobby.

A bell chimed. The elevator heaved as it arrived.

The doors parted with a slow hiss. Miguel swallowed hard as the gap widened. He strained to see what was going on. The cops were blocking his line of sight and he was at too sharp an angle to see much.

“Police,” shouted both cops in unison. “Put your weapon down.”

Miguel instinctively pressed himself against the wall. He flinched as the first round of bullets was fired. There were too many shots to count. His ears rang so badly, it took him a moment to realize the police had stopped firing. They’d lowered their weapons and were shouting something. He didn’t know what. He couldn’t hear a thing over the ringing in his ears.

Miguel saw the younger cop talk into his radio. The cop’s mouth opened and closed. Miguel couldn’t make out the words. Gradually, his hearing returned and he heard the tail end of a stream of NYPD jargon.

He couldn’t understand most of what was said. Something about “nonresponsive” and needing “a bus,” which he assumed meant an ambulance. Miguel watched a trickle of blood run along the marble floor until it formed a puddle. He edged closer. He glimpsed blood splatter on the wall of the elevator. He took one more step. Finally, he could see inside the elevator. He immediately regretted it. He’d never seen so much blood in all his life.

Book Review: NOS4A2 @joe_hill @WmMorrowBooks #Horror #NewEngland #Supernatural #Thriller

I did it.  I joined a group on Facebook (Katt’s Book Club) and participated in the book of the month for July, NOS4A2.  This was my FIRST horror tale and it won’t be my last!  I would like to note that I found this group thanks to Katt’s Book Corner here on WordPress!

I started to read this via audiobook and guys…that is TOUGH.  You are all rockstars who are able to follow along with audiobooks.  I eventually broke down and got the physical book from the library and started to do both and then gave up on the audiobook.  I will say, it irked me with how the narrator pronounced “Haverhill.”  I’m from New England and had family grow up in that area of Massachusetts and you do NOT pronounce it “Haver-hill.” ‘Nuff background…

So this is the story of Vic who has a supernatural power and can ride her bike across a bridge and be anywhere she needs to be.  Eventually she uses her power to try and stop Charlie Manx, a man who kidnaps children and takes them to Christmasland, where he claims they’ll be treated better than if they stayed with their parents.

I didn’t find this to be all too scary…it was disturbing, yes, terrifying and can’t read by myself at night, no.  This is an incredibly long book at almost 700 pages, but don’t let that intimidate you.  It is needed for every detail in this book.  We meet some awesome characters (my favorite is Maggie, another person with supernatural powers) and I found myself cheering Vic on.

Yes, this is now a television show on AMC and yes I am watching it now.  I became so enthralled with this book.  It consumes you and you are reading the pages with an intense hope.  I liked how it ended and then I didn’t like how it ended…2 major things happen at the end and one I loved and the other made me mad, haha.

4 stars.  This was a great read and despite its size, didn’t take me that much longer to read because I kept my nose inbetween the pages at all times.  The chapters are broken down into fairly small bits so it is easy to pick up and read for even a few minutes at a time!  Don’t let the genre keep you from reading this one, it’s definitely a great thriller!

Amazon & The Kindle: Part 1

Owning a Kindle can be overwhelming.  Every day on Facebook I see people who are excited about owning their first Kindle and then suddenly become overwhelmed with all of the information thrown at them.  I get it.  In this mini series I am going to help you through all the perks of owning a Kindle and show you how to get the most out of it!

Let’s break it down into simple steps:

  1. The Kindle Device itself (Part 1: released today)
  2. Kindle Owners’ Lending Library & The Amazon Store (Part 2: released August 4th)
  3. Amazon Prime & The Kindle (Part 3: released August 11th)
  4. Free (yes free) Newsletters For Kindle Reads (Part 4: released August 18th)
  5. Kindle Unlimited (Part 5: released August 25th)
  6. Your Local Library & Your Kindle (Part 6: released September 1st)

First thing first, you need a Kindle.  If you have been on the fence about getting a device I am going to break down all of the e-readers Amazon has to offer.  If you are a Kindle owner, feel free to skip this part, but, come back when I review the perks of the Kindle.

If you are unsure about purchasing a Kindle here is the best advice I can give.  Try it out first to see if you will even enjoy reading on a device.  Some people do not like it and cannot get into it and that is ok.  It is not for everyone.  I still read physical books, but, I love the world of books my Kindle has opened up for me!  So how can  you try it before you buy it?

smartphones

YOUR PHONE!  Using your Smartphone, download the Amazon Kindle app.  Find a book that looks appealing and interesting to you (there are cheap & free options out there, keep browsing) and download it to the app and read it!  If you can keep your attention and find yourself going back to your phone to read, viola, invest in an e-reader (trust me, the Kindles offer a much more eye appealing, larger screen than your phone).  If you find yourself uninterested in reading (and make sure it is not the book itself) then you know you probably would just waste your money on a Kindle.  Personally, I find this is the best way to know before you make the Kindle plunge if you’ll enjoy it or not!

Now that you have decided you want a Kindle, let’s learn about the different ones out there. **DISCLAIMER** I am not going to include the Kindle Fire in this review, it is NOT an e-reader, but a tablet.  The screen is the same as your phone and personally I enjoy reading on a screen that emulates a book page.  Let’s review the current Kindles available out on the market today; the entry Kindle, Kindle Paperwhite, and Kindle Oasis.

***I did not receive any compensation from any company for this post.  I wrote this post purely to inform you, the consumer, on e-reader options out there.  I chose to highlight Amazon Kindles because I personally own the Kindle Paperwhite…and LOVE it.  But, Amazon, if you’re out there, feel free to send me one of the new Paperwhite models, or an Oasis if you’re feeling froggy!***

kindleentry

Kindle $89.99 or 5 monthly payments of $18.00

What You’ll Get: 6″ screen, 4 GB storage (~2,200 books), wi-fi only, built in audible (you’ll need a bluetooth speaker), and ads (for $20 more you can opt to not have ads, but, they aren’t that big of a deal, they just show up on the lock screen)

Note: They just came out with the new Kindle and it has an adjustable front light setting now!  We have an old version of this Kindle and I absolute cannot stand that the screen is not lit at all.  My 6 year old uses it so she doesn’t mind clamping on the reading light to it.  Keep this in mind if you buy an older generation of this one!

kindlepaperwhite

Kindle Paperwhite $129.99 or 5 monthly payments of $26.00

What You’ll Get: 6″ screen, waterproof, 8 GB storage (~4,400 books) (or 32 GB +$30, ~more books than you’ll ever read in your lifetime), wi-fi (or option for cellular service), built in audible (you’ll need a bluetooth speaker), ads (again you can upgrade to get rid of them for $20 but I wouldn’t bother), and built in adjustable light

Note: For this Kindle and the Oasis you have the option to have your Kindle work on free cellular connectivity based off of AT&T’s towers.  You also will be able to roam in over 100 countries and connect to the Kindle store without needing wi-fi.  WARNING, to get that on the Paperwhite, it will cost you $249 total.  Personally, you don’t need the cellular connectivity, wi-fi is all around us.  Just make sure if you are going on a trip you download all the books before you go and you’ll be fine!  I feel this is the best bang for your buck.  You get a lot of storage, waterproof device (I’m jealous, mine isn’t, it’s the version before), and the backlit display.  This is the most affordable option where you get the most bang for your buck.  I appreciate that Amazon also lets you make monthly payments to help ease the up front cost!

kindleoasis

Kindle Oasis $249.00 or 5 monthly payments of $50.00

What You’ll Get: 7″ display, waterproof, 8 GB storage (~4,400 books) or 32 GB storage (+$30, ~more books than you’ll ever read in your lifetime), wi-fi (with cellular option), built in audible (you’ll need a bluetooth speaker), ads (again, you can pay for the upgrade but I would not waste your money, you’ll hardly notice them), customizable and auto-adjusting screen from white light to warm amber

Note: If you really want that cellular connectivity for some reason it will cost you $349.99 for the Oasis.  This Kindle boasts a better processing speed and has the built in page turn buttons.  Is that worth a difference of $120 from the Paperwhite and Oasis?  If you have the money to burn, sure, otherwise get the Paperwhite!

To review them side by side:

Final Note: In any of the Kindles the power adapter is NOT included.  It comes with a charging cord, but, not the actual plug.  If you need one, make sure you pick one up locally or order it when you get the Kindle.  I also recommend a cover for your Kindle.  It will help protect it!!  I am just drooling over the newly released and updated Oasis…I’m trying to think of a reason I need to upgrade from my Paperwhite!

I hope this has helped you in some way shape or form.  If you read on something that isn’t a Kindle drop me a line and let me know how it is!  Part 2 coming next Sunday, August 4th!

Book Review: The Flatshare @OLearyBeth @MacmillanUSA @Flatironbooks #Contemporary #ChickLit #RomCom #BookWorm #ReadThisNow #ReadMe #5stars

Thank you for all of your amazing reviews on The Flatshare, I have finally read it myself.  What took me so long?!

Tiffy.  She is down on her luck and needs to move out of her ex-boyfriends place.  She now owes her ex-boyfriend back rent because he felt like she was taking advantage of him.  She has to find a place for CHEAP so she can get out of his manipulating hair.

Leon.  He works nights, sleep days, and spends the weekend with his girlfriend.  He needs extra money to cover his brother’s lawyer.  He comes up with the brilliant idea to sublease his place to someone who works a 9 to 5 job.

The book is told from their two points of view.  Tiffy answers the ad and meets Leon’s girlfriend who sets everything up.  How weird is it that Tiffy and Leon share a place and have never met?!

This was a fun and uplifting read.  I loved how O’Leary gave Leon a very distinct voice, it was easy to picture him and his thought process.  The same can be said for how she wrote Tiffy.  This has a Eleanor Oliphant vibe to it, except better.  The romance aspect to this book doesn’t start until just after a third of the way through and by that time so you’re hooked on Tiffy and Leon as characters that you’re like, let’s roll with what is happening!

5 freaking stars!  I want to gush about everything that was in this book, but I don’t want to spoil it for you.  The penmanship and careful consideration for each of these characters is unreal.  I felt as it this was a real story and I was hearing it from both parties.  I really got to know each of these characters and their quirks!  Absolutely one of the best books this year!  I thank my local library for having a few copies of this book on hand so I did not have to wait long for my turn with it!  Thankfully I only had it 3 days so the next person can dive on in!  Get this book NOW!

Welcome to Thursday Quotables.  Books Kat Likes has joined in on the weekly fun and came up with this great description of what this is…

This feature is the place to highlight a great quote, line, or passage discovered during your reading each week. Whether it’s something funny, startling, gut-wrenching, or just really beautifully written, Thursday Quotables is where my favorite lines will be, and you’re invited to join in! You should join in too!  Leave the link to your Thursday Quotable post below and I will make sure to check it out!!  Or just leave a comment with a quote from a book that has struck you!

Today I am going to feature a quote from this book…

TheEscapeRoom

She studiously kept a faint upward tilt to her lips. It was a practice drummed into her over many years working in a male-dominated profession. Me could snarl or look angry with impunity; women had to smile serenely regardless of the provocation.

Preach on Megan, preach on!  This is SO true.

Does this quote make you more interested in this book?  Please come back on Tuesday, July 30th for my stop on The Escape Room blog tour AND the same day it’s released!  I look forward to seeing you then!

Pre-Ordering Books

When and where do you decide to pre-order books?  I am a bargain hunter and I really hate spending a lot of money.  There are a few exceptions to the rule and occasionally I will splurge on a new book.  Usually I will use the library, eBay, or used book stores for my reads, but every now and then I’ll get that crisp new book.

I recently had a bad experience with Amazon and a pre-order.  I had pre-ordered The Nanny by Gilly MacMillan.  It was slated to be released in June; however, the release was pushed back to September.  I had it on pre-order and had locked in a steal of a price.  The date was never changed on the order I had and so the day after the original release I get an e-mail saying it was cancelled.  What?  So to customer service I go and the rep was trying to tell me it was from a 3rd party vendor (and she linked me to a page where it was available, very odd) and they can’t honor the price and all this other nonsense.  Lesson learned, I will screen shot my future pre-orders from Amazon.  I escalated the issue and ended up getting a credit of the difference in the prices (I was just irritated as to why they created a whole new listing, it was a mess) and then decided…I’ll pre-order a different book.

Don’t worry, I have the order on screen shot, haha.  I have been DYING for the next winter in paradise installment from Elin Hilderbrand so instead of pre-ordering The Nanny again, I went with What Happens In Paradise.  A co-worker introduced me to this series and she’s retiring so I’m carrying the torch with our reading circle and will buy this one for immediate consumption when it is finally released.  Haha.  This is one of those books I can’t wait for.  I can wait for The Nanny, no big deal, but not this one!

So what determines how you pre-order a book, if you ever pre-order.  Favorite author?  Reviews?  For me, we were left at such a cliffhanger…I honestly think I think about this book DAILY.  I know a lot of your order books often and I’m just curious as to what makes you pre-order a book and when you wait.  Let’s discuss!!

Greece…this is a stop on our next family trip and I’ve been craving this setting in preparation!!  Maybe I’ll read some and be inspired to visit a few places!

Do you have any recommendations for books which have the above settings?? What settings do you want to read more of???  Happy Tuesday!
